Conducted by Francisco J. Núñez, 40 YPC choristers take the “stage” as students of Mr. Chips in Gordon Getty’s latest opera, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, which is receiving it’s New York premiere on Wednesday, March 2nd.
The opera, originally composed for the live stage but re-imagined as a film, tells the heart-warming story of a teacher at Brookfield, an all-boys English boarding school to which “Chips” dedicates most of his adult life. Goodbye, Mr. Chips chronicles Chips’ story of love, loss and learning over his decades-long tenure at Brookfield. While the rest of the cast was filming on-set in San Francisco, YPC’s choristers were captured as projections in New York City, to vividly appear in the film as Chips recalls memories of his students.
Directed by Brian Staufenbiel, the film features Nathan Granner in the titular role of Mr. Chips, and Lester Lynch as Merrivale. The orchestra of stellar San Francisco Bay Area players is conducted by Nicole Paiement.
