Young People’s Chorus of New York City’s Holiday Special, Topsy Turvy New York, Wins 66th Annual New York Emmy® Award

NEW YORK CITY (October 30, 2023) – The world-renowned Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) proudly announces that its feature-length holiday special Topsy Turvy New York has won a 66th Annual New York Emmy® Award in the “Children/Youth (12 and under) – Short or Long Form Content” category at the 66th Annual New York Emmy® gala held at the New York Marriott Marquis on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

Topsy Turvy New York debuted on ALL ARTS, a New York Emmy-winning arts and culture hub created by the WNET Group, the community supported home of New York’s PBS stations, on December 21, 2022.

Under the direction of YPC’s Artistic Director/Founder Francisco J. Núñez and Creative Director Elizabeth Núñez, the holiday special is set to an original story by best-selling author James Patterson and co-written by author and lyricist Susan DiLallo and author Richard DiLallo. The production is an entertaining and inspiring musical journey of holiday classics from around the world and captures the relief and joy of young people as they emerged from the pandemic.  Filmed at various locations throughout New York City, the special reflects the diversity of both the YPC choristers and the city it represents.

“It is an extraordinary honor to receive this prestigious award,” Francisco J. Núñez.  “Setting this holiday special to a story written by James Patterson was something very new for YPC, and we knew we were creating something special and reflective of New York City. We’re so proud that the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized this, too. It’s really a testament to the talent and commitment of our choristers who are the very heart and soul of YPC.”

Patterson first came across YPC when he was working on his book The Twelve Topsy-Turvy Days of Christmas. “It had to do with my favorite holiday song, The Twelve Days of Christmas,” he said. “I saw YPC’s magical performance of the song online and, on a lark, reached out to them. The rest is musical—and I guess literary—history.  They’re a fantastic organization, and it’s been a joy working with them.”

Internationally celebrated for its innovative model of diversity and artistic excellence, YPC has nurtured the talents of children from all walks of life for over three decades.  Today, the organization is one of the most prominent choruses in the world. In July 2023, it won  five gold medals – three as World Champions – at the World Choir Games in Korea.
