Winged Deer Park is one of the primary public access points to Boone Lake, an impoundment of the Watauga and Holston Rivers managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Following the TVA’s successful multi-year repair of the Boone Dam seepage issues, the lake's water levels have settled back into predictable, seasonal summer pool depths.
Boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders rely on the park's lighted twin-lane public boat ramp. Backing down the wide launch ramp is straightforward even on crowded holiday weekends, backed by an expansive paved staging lot with designated pull-through stalls for trucks with boat trailers. Launching is entirely free, requiring no municipal permits or daily launch fees.
Anglers and walkers make heavy use of the shoreline boardwalks. Species pulled from these waters include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Because the ramp basin sits inside a sheltered cove off the lake's main channel, paddlers launch safely away from the deep wakes of speedboats and wake-surfing craft. Shoreline erosion control projects completed along the water’s edge have further stabilized the banks, creating dedicated rock outcroppings for shore-bound families.
