Planet Fitness operates primarily as a franchise model. Each location is an independently owned corporate affiliate operating under centralized brand standards. Because of this decentralized architecture, corporate customer support consistently refuses to cancel memberships submitted through central web forms or corporate phone lines, bouncing individuals back to their individual home club.
The official contract specifies two primary cancellation routes:
First, an in-person visit to your designated home location. You must walk into the club during business hours, state your intent to terminate, present your photo ID or key tag, sign an electronic cancellation form, and request a physical or emailed receipt confirming zero balance.
Second, written notification mailed directly to the home club. The contract demands that the written notice include your full legal name, home address, phone number, member identification number, and an unambiguous declaration of contract termination. Crucially, sending a standard first-class letter offers no legal proof of delivery; franchisees can simply claim the letter never arrived, allowing automated dues to continue indefinitely.
Whether you hold a classic basic tier or are pursuing a Planet Fitness Black Card cancellation, the procedural rules remain identical. Black Card holders face no unique loopholes. If you signed a 12-month commitment, you must also clear any outstanding buyout fee, frequently set around $58, before the desk will release your contract.
