Canadian actor Justin Chatwin brought an essential vulnerability to the role. Prior to landing the part of Jimmy/Steve, Chatwin had already built a formidable Hollywood resume, notably portraying Tom Cruise’s teenage son Robbie in Steven Spielberg's 2005 blockbuster War of the Worlds and starring as Goku in 2009's Dragonball Evolution.
His casting in Shameless provided the perfect counterbalance to Emmy Rossum's raw, unvarnished portrayal of Fiona. Chatwin played Jimmy with a twitchy, anxious charm that kept the character sympathetic even when committing gross moral betrayals.
Following his permanent exit from Shameless in 2015, Chatwin transitioned into diverse television and film projects:
- Portrayed Cameron Breeze in the crime drama American Gothic (2016).
- Played Erik Wallace in Netflix’s science-fiction series Another Life (2019, 2021).
- Starred in indie films including The Assassin's Code (2018) and Die in a Gunfight (2021).
- Established himself as an avid adventure motorcyclist, documenting long-distance cross-continental expeditions.
Chatwin has often spoken fondly of his tenure on Shameless, acknowledging that Jimmy was fundamentally broken, a man who ran toward disaster because peace bored him to tears.
