The turning point in Bolsen’s life occurred in June 2006 in the emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Martin Herbert Steiner, a 47-year-old German mechanical engineer, disappeared after arriving for what was ostensibly a business discussion. Days later, Steiner’s body was recovered, packed inside a suitcase dumped in the desert dunes near the Sharjah border.
UAE law enforcement swiftly targeted Bolsen. Forensic investigators linked Steiner’s credit cards and personal belongings to Bolsen's residence. During interrogations and trial proceedings, details emerged regarding how Steiner had been lured into a trap. bolsen claimed the death was accidental, alleging he had administered chloroform to subdue Steiner following a dispute. Medical examiners concluded that Steiner died of suffocation.
In October 2007, the Sharjah Sharia Court of First Instance convicted Bolsen of premeditated murder, robbery, and disposing of a corpse. The court sentenced him to death by firing squad. Transferred to Sharjah Central Jail, Bolsen faced execution under strict Emirati penal codes.
