Director David Mallet translated the song's psychological tension into striking imagery for MTV. The music video features floating white masks, a choir of hooded figures, and a floor encircled by rings of open flame. Idol stands at the center of the inferno, sneering in leather gloves while Lister appears as a series of spectral projections. The visual tone matched the detached dread of the lyrics.
The physical cost of the shoot was severe. During a marathon 30-hour session in a studio outside London, Idol refused to take breaks between setups. The combination of intense heat from the open fire pits, heavy smoke-machine fog, and bright studio lighting dried out Idol’s contact lenses. He fell asleep on a flight to Phoenix immediately after wrapping. When he woke up, his lenses had fused to his corneas.
Hospital staff had to remove the lenses surgically, leaving Idol temporarily blind with bandaged eyes for several days. In an ironic twist of fate, the singer who had spent weeks singing about Christiane Franju’s lost face lived through his own period of sightless isolation just as the single ascended the Billboard charts.
