Before any user can drop a gift into a creator's stream, they must convert local fiat currency into TikTok coins. The platform does not sell individual single coins for a penny. Instead, viewers purchase predetermined bundles through an in-app coin recharge window managed by Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store.
The standard baseline pack starts at 65 coins for $0.99 on mobile devices. Larger bundles run up to 16,500 coins for $249.99. Because ByteDance operates these microtransactions through mobile app stores, Apple and Google claim their standard 30% digital goods processing fees. To protect its bottom line, ByteDance passes that surcharge directly to consumers.
This dynamic creates a two-tiered economy. When viewers purchase coins through the mobile interface, each coin costs roughly 1.52 cents at entry tiers, decreasing slightly to 1.4 cents in larger denominations. Those fractional pennies accumulate quickly when audiences buy high-volume gift bursts.
