Long before viewers tuned in to high school choirs, television audiences met a different sort of Gleek on Saturday mornings. In September 1977, animation studio Hanna-Barbera debuted The All-New Super Friends Hour on ABC, pairing DC Comics heavyweights with two teenaged heroes: Zan and Jayna, the Wonder Twins. To provide physical comedy for younger demographics, writers introduced an alien companion named Gleek.

Sporting blue fur, pointed ears, and an expressive prehensile tail, Gleek possessed average primate intelligence paired with occasional situational bravery. His primary running gag involved carrying water buckets to assist Zan, who required liquid contact to transform into various states of matter. Voiced by animation veteran Michael Bell, the character rarely spoke English, communicating instead through chattering vocalizations.

While the character frustrated comic purists, Gleek cemented a footprint in licensed merchandise, comic books, and animated revivals for over four decades. When Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment designed modern homages, including an Easter egg appearance in the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2019, the blue alien monkey resurfaced as a nostalgic touchstone for Generation X.
