DESCRIPTION:« All Events \n\n\n\n\n \n\nJune 18 at 8:00 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall\n \n \n \n \n\n\nYoung People’s Chorus of New York City and Yale Choral Artists take the stage at Merkin Concert Hall for an entertaining concert of diverse works that relate to citizenship and the contributions to America of music from many parts of the world – from Finland to the Amazonian rain forest. \nA highlight of the program is the World Premiere of Arturo O’Farrill’s Borderless\, a YPC commission that imagines a world where everyone belongs and is free to roam. A second highlight is the New York premiere of Paola Prestini’s The Glass Box\, a co-commission of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and Yale Choral Artists. This work was inspired by Rachel Aviv’s New Yorker Magazine piece\, “E.R. from Sweden\,” which describes the trauma of refugee children who fall into comas when learning their families will be deported. \nThis concert will be preceded by a discussion at 7:30 p.m. moderated by YPC Artistic Director/Founder Francisco J. DESCRIPTION:« All Events \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\nSunday\, June 24 at 2:00 p.m.\nCarnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage\n \n \n\nChoristers from the Young People’s Chorus of New York City will be joined by young singers from 15 other youth choruses from China\, Finland\, Ireland\, and six U.S. states for a DCINY 10th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall.  The concert will be highlighted by world premiere works composed and conducted by Francisco J. Núñez\, artistic director/founder of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City\, and Venezuelan composer/conductor Cristian Grases. \nMr. Núñez will conduct his new work\, Liminality –  as part of the DCINY Premiere Project –  as well as other compositions he has composed –  Forever is My Song\, Naturaleza\, and Es Tu Tiempo.  \nMr. Grases will conduct the world premiere of La Cigarra y La Hormiga\, a seven-movement work based on rhythms mainly from Colombia\, Cuba\, Brazil\, Dominican Republic\, and Venezuela. \nThe program also features Hanrich Claassen\, music director of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestras\, conducting his young musicians in works by Deussen and Grieg.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \nCRISTIAN GRASES\, FRANCISCO J. NÚÑEZ\, AND HANRICH CLAASSEN \n \n \n\n \n \n\nLiminality: \nLiminality is a meditation on time\, transcendence and temporality\, fusing various philosophical and religious ideas. Central to these is the idea of “deep splendor\,” a state of deepest meditation while being fully aware of your surroundings\, a term mentioned in “The Heart of Perfect Wisdom” or the Heart Sutra\, composed in India between 100BC and 600 AD. In this life of anxiety—about the future\, about death—the “I” seeks answers to questions—who am I? where am I going? why am I here?—but is constantly reminded of the majesty of nature and the universe\, of which human life is but a small part. In Heidegger’s metaphysics\, we find a way to reconcile ourselves with the inevitability of death by living our lives to their fullest potential.
