Núñez will be featured in National Sawdust’s very special Season 5 opening concert on Friday\, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. In a nod to this empowering women-led organization\, National Sawdust begins the season with a spotlight on seven female composers who have and are bringing their distinctive voices to the music of our time: Clara Schumann\, Emma O’Halloran\, Mary Lou Williams\, Missy Mazzoli\, Meredith Monk\, Paola Prestini\, and this year’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid. \nOn opening night\, YPC will reprise Ellen Reid’s So Much on My Soul\, a YPC commission that includes a text inspired by personal stories from several YPC chorus members. \nTickets on sale now at Nationalsawdust.org. \n\n\n\n\nDate:\nFriday\, September 27\, 2019 \n Time:\n7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\nVenue:\nNational Sawdust\n80 N 6th St\, Brooklyn\, NY 11249 \nTickets:\nGeneral Admission $35\nPurchase here \nIn a review following YPC’s world premiere performance of So Much on My Soul this past spring\, Classical Voice of North America wrote: \n“So Much On my Soul came out of talks that Reid had with the singers\, about what makes them personally anxious and how they cope with their fears…Reid’s colorful\, charming style is well proportioned for the piece and successfully tailored to this type of voice…Reid was quoted as saying\, ‘It felt important to have cycles and repeating gestures\, as the journey to self-acceptance and balance is cyclical and endless.’ I’d say the message was delivered.”

SUMMARY:Vocal Resolutions: Shaping Perceptions through Music
DESCRIPTION:« All Events \n\n\n\n\nMay 19\, 2019 \nThe Young People’s Chorus of New York City culminates the third season of Vocal Resolutions: Shaping Perceptions through Music –  an initiative that uses singing as a catalyst for cultural exploration and mutual understanding –  with a concert\, centering on this year’s theme of “balance.” \nIn partnership with the Shallaway Youth Choir of Newfoundland\, the concert is curated by 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Reid and YPC Artistic Director Francisco Núñez and will be highlighted by the world premiere of Ms. Reid’s So Much on My Soul\,  a YPC commission on the theme\, to be premiered by both of the evening’s choirs. \nIn addition to individual sets by YPC and Shallaway\, the program also features Ms. Reid’s percussion work Fear | Release performed by Mantra Percussion\, as well as a performance by YPC and Mantra of her cover of The Books’ Take Time . \nWhen Francisco J. Núñez asked me to write a piece about “balance” for the Young People’s Chorus of New York City\, he was quick to specify that the lyrics for my piece could come from anywhere and that I could interpret the word however I saw fit.  After meeting with the YPC musicians\, it became clear that the most compelling texts were the choristers’ own personal stories. It felt important for the piece to have cycles and repeating gestures\, as the journey to self-acceptance and balance is both cyclical and endless. \n– Ellen Reid \nMajor support for Vocal Resolutions is provided by The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. The Lead Corporate Sponsor for Balancing Bubbles is Travelers. \n“So Much on My Soul” was commissioned by YPC with support from The Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund. Special thanks to The ASCAP Foundation\, Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University\, and Amphion Foundation for supporting new music commissions and performances\, and the Witherspoon Fund of the New York Community Trust for supporting new work by female composers. \nYoung People’s Chorus of New York City \nEllen Reid\nCredit:James Matthew Daniel \nShallaway Youth Choir \n\n\n\n\nDate:\nMay 19\, 2019 \nTime:\n7:00pm \n\n\n\n\nVenue:\nGerald W. SUMMARY:A Collective Ribbon
DESCRIPTION:« All Events \n\n\n\n\nMarch 17\, 2019 at 3:00 p.m.\nJohn E. Reeves Great Hall at FIT \nYPC Performs Excerpt from “Fire in My Mouth” \n“Protest\,” an excerpt from Julia Wolfe’s acclaimed “Fire in my Mouth\,” an oratorio based on the tragic 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire\, will be reprised by members of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and members of the New York Philharmonic. \nThis Sunday afternoon performance is part of a weekend-long series of events and discussions on March 16 and 17 at the Fashion Institute of Technology to create a permanent memorial to this catastrophic event\, which claimed 146 young lives. \nThis performance is free and open to the public. More information is available at www.rememberthetrianglefire.org \n\n\n\n\nDate:\nMarch 17\, 2019 \nTime:\n3:00 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nVenue:\nJohn E. Reeves Great Hall at the Fashion Institute of Technology \nTickets:\nThis event is free and open to the public \nIn January\, over 100 female singers from Young People’s Chorus of New York City joined The Crossing and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Jaap van Zweden in three world premiere\, multimedia performances of Julia Wolfe’s Fire in My Mouth at David Geffen Hall. \nThe response from critics and audience members was overwhelming. Here are some comments: \n“Women are the narrative heart of this musical adaptation. For this world premiere\, [Julia] Wolfe was gifted with the extraordinary contributions from the female members of the professional chamber choir The Crossing and the exemplary young women in the multicultural Young People’s Chorus of New York City. This aggregation of young women dominated with voice and presence…The night belonged to Julia Wolfe\, The Crossing\, and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City.”  – Classical Voice North America \n\n“The 146 singers were all women of the same ages – young and just a bit older – as those who worked and died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Commitment shone in their faces\, was heard in their voices and was evidenced by their every movement. They believed in Wolfe’s creation\, and the audience was inspired by it.”  – Seen and Heard International \n\n“The standing ovation that ensued lasted for several curtain calls… No one\, save a few wheelchair-bound patrons\, was still seated by the time the applause finally died out\, something I’ve never seen at David Geffen Hall and don’t expect to see again for some time.  Indeed\, it was the finest world premiere I’ve yet had the good fortune to attend.” – Oberon’s Grove \n\nWolfe\, in short\, has been steadily working up to Fire in my mouth. Still\, it’s an accomplishment on a level unmatched in her previous work. Fire in my mouth is a monumental achievement in high musical drama\, among the most commandingly imaginative and emotively potent works of any kind that I’ve ever experienced. – The Nation \n\nMr. van Zweden led a commanding account of a score that requires close coordination between disparate forces\, and which ends with an elegiac final chorus in which the names of all 146 victims are tenderly sung to create a fabric of music and memory.  – The New York Times
